iPhone 7 vs. iPhone 8 – Whats updated

Apple refreshed the iPhone lineup with three phones this year instead of three. The magical iPhone X (Read it as Ten), iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Here we will compare how they stack up against the last gen iPhone 7/7 Plus.

Look wise it looks similar to outgoing iPhone 7/7 Plus, but there are some interesting changes, both on the inside and outside. The most distinctive change is the new glass back which we once saw in iPhone 4S . It also features an updated camera with better low light performance and better OIS. Some welcome additions are Wireless charging and much improved True Tone display. New iPhone also gets Bluetooth 5.0 instead of 4.2 found in last gen iPhone.10

Let’s see How the New iPhone performs on our comparison charts.
Camera

Camera department received the significant upgrades which include capabilities to record up to 60 FPS 4K videos thanks to new Image Signal Processor The iPhone 8 has single 12 MP f/1.8 sensor which is stabilized. This result in reduced noise in the photo. A Slow Sync flash has been added which also improves the low light performance. The Plus model has the much talked about portrait mode, now added with portrait lighting mode. Sadly, still, only the wide angle lens gets OIS not the telephoto lens, just like the previous generation. Regarding Video, the capability to record at 4k 60FPS is a welcome improvement, thanks to the Apple A11 Bionic Engine.

The new iPhone retains the camera bump just like old one.

Display

The display receives an update with new True Tones displays making it way from the iPad.The display contrast decreases as the light around you get brighter, and whites look different under different light sources. Rest all remains same. The iPhone 8/8Plus display is 4.7/5.5-inch widescreen LCD 1334×750/1980×1080-pixel resolution at 326/401 PPI respectively.

Battery

The battery is one department where we expected some improvement, but our wishes remained unheard. Although apple lighting adapter now has USB C type spec built into which makes the new iPhone fast charge capable. Apple claims that new iPhone will charge 50% in 30 minutes. But there is a problem with fast charging. The supplied accessories, i.e., 5W power adapter and lighting cable are not Fast Charging capable. Instead, you have to buy Apple 29W USB C type Fast charger along with USB C Type to lighting cable or similar 3rd accessories to be able to fast charge. Wireless charging also makes its way to the iPhone though Qi standard. Adopting a non-proprietary standard makes the iPhone able to charge at places like coffee shops and airports and saves the manufacturers from developing new standards.

Wireless charging station will be available in 2018.

Build

New iPhone weighs 148g for the regular model and 202g for the plus model, which is a tad higher than the 138g/188g for the old iPhone 7/Plus respectively. The glass on the back is the reason for increased weight. According to Apple, it’s the strongest glass used in a smartphone(including the front one) which is made by seven layer color process. The frame is made of aerospace grade 7000 series aluminum alloy. It is dust and water resistant with IP67 rating as the previous generation iPhone 7. Colour choices are reduced, now you have new Space gray, gold and silver to choose. Gone are Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black and glossy Jet Black. The stereo speakers on the top and bottom are 25% louder than iPhone 7/7Plus.

Performance

Here is where most advancements happened. The new iPhone is powered by all new (as always) 6 Core A11 Bionic engine with M11 motion coprocessor. It features two performance cores which 25% faster than A10 which powers the iPhone 7. Similarly, high-efficiency cores are 70% faster than A10. The GPU on A11 is designed by apple which delivers 30% increased performance at half of power usage of A10’s GPU. The highlight here is Neural engine which enables the iPhone 8 to be machine learning ready. There is also a new Image Signal processor which allows the new phone to do 4K at 60 FPS.

Still Lightning, still no headphone jack

Conclusion

iPhone 8/8 Plus is not a much improvement over previous generation iPhone 7/7 Plus. Only major happens on the inside, the overall design and build remained the same. Within 10 minutes of it release the iPhone X (read ten) made it look outdated. But it will sell, people will buy it, not because of iPhone 8/8 Plus not offering any significant improvement but because the iPhone X is so advanced that people will fear to adapt it. Apple has done same to MacBook lineup with Retina, iPad with iPad Pro, ie, launched a much pricier product. But the problem with these first generation products is that they are not perfect. Like the Antena problem in iPhone 4 and bending problem on iPhone 6, all had some serious flaw. So, the chances are strong that you need to wait for a complete review before investing ₹89,000($999) on it. Most people like to be on safe side, so they will probably go with iPhone 7.
